Topic Habitat Typing: Duffy Gulch West Branch Embeddedness
 
Caption:  Gravel embeddedness is a measure of gravel quality at potential salmonid spawning sites taken ocularly during habitat typing surveys. The survey was conducted in September 1996 and covered 3,138 feet or 0.6 miles. Embeddedness is the degree to which substrate in pool tail crests are buried. Optimal spawning habitat according to CDFG (1994) is less than 25% embedded (see InfoLinks for more background). The West Branch Duffy Gulch showed substantially impaired spawning habitat suitability with all pool tail crests showing greater than 75% embeddedness. This measure is far less useful for determining gravel suitability and trends than quantitative methods such as McNeil samples but it provides some indication of habitat quality. Data collected by Georgia Pacific and supplied for use in KRIS by the California Department of Fish and Game, Sacramento, CA.
