KRIS Humboldt Bay: Chart Page

Area Basin-wide/Regional
Topic Aquatic Insects: EPT Index All Humboldt Bay Tributaries 1994-98

Caption:  This chart shows the number of mayflies (Ephemeroptera), stoneflies (Plecoptera) and caddisflies (Trichoptera), which are orders of pollution intolerant aquatic insect taxa, for all all Humboldt Bay tributary sampling locations in all years sampled. The number of species present from these orders comprises the EPT index. If there are more 25 species of these orders present, it indicates a very healthy ecosystem, while fewer than 12 species indicates impaired aquatic health (Harrington, 1999). Values in the mid- to low teens indicate decreasing aquatic health. Click on the Picture tab to see a map of monitoring locations. Data were collected by PALCO. See Info Links for more information on using aquatic insects as indicators.
