Fish: Estuary Beach Seine Sample Totals 1997 |
|
Caption: This Chart shows the various species caught in the Russian River estuary using a beach seine at four sites from May to November 1997. Station #1 is nearest the ocean and Station #4 furthest upstream (See Picture tab). Sixteen species were captured, with 69 percent of the total represented by topsmelt alone, followed by Sacramento sucker (18 percent). The high number of suckers is a result of schools of young of the year being captured (20-40 mm) (MSC, 1998). Although MSC (1998) identified seventeen juvenile salmon as a coho, subsequent genetic tests indicated that the fish were actually Chinook (MSC, 2001).
