Caption: This chart shows the total acreage irrigated agricultural land in Kennebec, Lincoln, and Waldo counties during the period 1987-1997. These three counties comprise most of the Sheepscot watershed. The acreage of irrigated land increased substantially from 1987-1997, although it remains only a tiny fraction of overall agricultural lands. For example, in 1997 there were only 365 acres of irrigated agricultural land in Kennebec County out of a total of 88134 acres of farmland. Note that the data are for the entire extent of the each county, not just the pieces that are in the Sheepscot watershed. Data were collected by the U.S. Census of Agriculture.
